Parenting –Legal Rights & Responsibilities (10:00 AM – Noon)

The responsibilities of being a parent are many and legal issues can sometimes get overlooked. Parenting-Legal Rights and Responsibilities highlights those rights and responsibilities for new and expecting parents. This workshop includes subject matter about financial responsibilities during pregnancy, the naming and registering of children, access to treaty rights as well as parenting and contact rights upon separation. It also includes lists of financial resources that are available for new parents.

Kinship & Foster Care  (1:00 – 2:30 PM)

Kinship & Foster Care – It is reported that there have never been more Aboriginal children in care then there is now. With the Kinship & Foster Care workshop, we endeavor to explain the process of how to become a kinship family and what your job entails, stressing the importance of children being placed within their own family or community. The Foster Care application process will also be described as well as well as benefits and challenges to both programs.

Self-Representation in Court (3:00 – 4:30 PM)

Self-Representation In Court – representing yourself in court, by choice or circumstance, is overwhelming at the best of times. This workshop will guide you through the court and trial process and provide resources available to assist you. We will also be doing a scripted role-play.

These workshops are delivered by Bearpaw Legal Education Centre and are free to attend. Please register with Pamela Scanie, Family Support Worker, FCSS, Cold Lake First Nations at 780-594-7183 ext.239. Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
