Legal Research 101 – will look at the tools which any citizen with access to an internet connection may find answers to their legal questions. On the way we can look at some interesting laws which are on the books – for example did you know that it is illegal to tell fortunes for money unless you are sincere? this is in your modern criminal code – section 365 … We will look at free websites and check out some interesting laws. Since we elect the people who make the laws — we need to follow up and see what is being done on our behalf! Presentation by Leslie Kieth, Library Coordinator, Alberta Law Libraries.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING BEHIND THE WHEEL?- Distracted Driving Legislation (Bill 16) – The Distracted Driving Legislation has been called the toughest in Canada and perhaps North America and it came into effect September 1, 2011. It Restricts drivers from using hand-held cell phones, texting, eating and grooming etc. It also applies to all vehicles, including bikes. Please join us for this informative session and learn about this new law. There will also be an RCMP Officer available for Q&A.

Wills & Estate Planning – Planning tools to use: if a person is mentally or physically incapacitated; during lifetime and at death (i.e., trusts, gifts and wills). Tips & Steps on Applying for a Pardon – A pardon allows people who were convicted of a criminal offence, but have completed their sentence and demonstrated they are law-abiding citizens for a prescribed number of years (3 – 5 years in most cases), to have their criminal record kept separate and apart from other criminal records. For step-by-step instructions on applying for a pardon, please join us for Public Legal Education workshop and learn about the new changes (as of June 2010) to the Pardons process and how to apply for a pardon through the Parole Board of Canada.

Protection Against Family Violence Act Awareness Workshop – An Introduction to Lac La Biche & Area Family Violence Program (Presentation by Darlene Billey) will be followed by a session on the Protection Against Family Violence Act (PAFVA). This presentation is intended for individuals who may come in contact with victims of family violence. Participants will be provided a better understanding of this legislation, as it relates to victims of family violence. Topics covered in this session are as follows: Introduction to PAFVA; History of PAFVA; Benefits & Summary of PAFVA; Amendments (2006) PAFVA; Key Definitions; Tools of PAFVA; Other Tools; Breaches; Roles & Responsibilities; Case Studies; and Resources. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and the Justice System WORKSHOP – Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is one of the most complicated problems facing the justice system today. Poorly understood, difficult to diagnose and burdened by social stigma, FASD makes life extremely challenging for the people who suffer from it and presents tremendous challenges for social service providers and the justice system. This workshop aims to educate the public about the reality of FASD and to provide court workers, social workers and people working within the justice system with advice on how to better help people with FASD in conflict with the law. Included in this workshop is the AMPIA Award-nominated BearPaw documentary film Invisible: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and the Justice System. Taking Control VIDEO – Knowing Your Rights Within the Child, Youth & Family Enhancement Act is a new docu-drama by BearPaw Media Productions on the subject of the Alberta Child, Youth & Family Enhancement Act, and what it means for people who become involved in the child welfare system in Alberta.
